What these dates do and don’t tell you
Is there one universal release date?
No. Dermatology, OB/GYN, orthopaedic surgery, pathology and urology coordinate a day or a set of days through their program-director organizations. General surgery recommends a window. Pediatrics sets an earliest date. Internal medicine, family medicine, psychiatry, neurology, anesthesiology and emergency medicine invite on a rolling basis, and many programs publish their own fixed days and times.
If the date passed and I haven’t heard, am I out?
Not necessarily. Most organizations ask programs to invite only as many applicants as they have slots and to keep inviting as slots open, often for weeks. A reported invite from another applicant tells you a program has started, not that it has finished. Reports on RMR are self-reported and unverified; no report never means a program hasn’t sent invites.
Where do these dates come from?
Organization guidance is quoted from each document linked above and was checked on October 13, 2026. Program dates come from each program’s own website, with the source and check date on every row of the specialty pages. Reported invites are applicants’ own reports, totals as of Oct 16, 2026, 5:22 PM Eastern. Found a newer statement? Tell us.
Keep your own dates in the private interview planner, and use the application timeline for the official ERAS and NRMP calendar.
