Curriculum & Education
Overview
The PGY-1 (Clinical Base Year) provides strong training in Internal Medicine, Perioperative Medicine, Critical Care, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Neuroscience, Pain Medicine, and Anesthesiology, among other areas. Residents gain experience through diverse rotations and clinical assignments in inpatient and outpatient settings, while the CA-1 and CA-2 years focus on fundamentals and subspecialties. The CA-3 year emphasizes advanced and complex anesthesia practice and includes opportunities in research and public health education.
Application
The application deadline is September 25, 2024. We offer 21 positions in the Anesthesiology Categorical Match. Our application requirements include CV, personal statement, MSPE (dean’s letter), transcript, and a minimum of three letters of recommendation. A USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX 1 is required to apply, and either a USMLE Step 2 score or COMLEX 2 score is required prior to February 1, 2025. The application requirements are the same for international medical graduates. In addition, we do require a minimum of one year of US clinical experience for these applicants. We accept J-1 visas only, and do not support H1-B sponsorship. Upon receipt of your application, the Residency Selection Committee will review your credentials. Interviews are scheduled by invitation only. Interviews are conducted on select Monday and Friday mornings (Central Time) during October, November, and December. All interviews will be conducted virtually for the 2024-25 season.

Residents work at several key locations: Vanderbilt University Hospital, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital, and VA Medical Center (on VUMC campus), as well as satellite ambulatory surgery locations.
Fellowship
The Vanderbilt Department of Anesthesiology offers opportunities for residents to pursue fellowships after graduation, including a dedicated global health fellowship that allows residents to earn a Masters of Public Health degree. Additionally, there is mention of the BH Robbins Scholars Program, enabling residents to complete the Clinician Scientist Track during their CA-3 year.
