Curriculum & Education

Overview

The curriculum consists of a mix of hospital care and ambulatory settings, with residents completing a variety of 4-week block rotations. The first-year curriculum emphasizes hospital care, while the second and third years integrate more ambulatory training. First year residents (PGY-1) complete blocks in family medicine wards, internal medicine, pediatrics, ICU, surgery, OB, and community medicine.

Application

Candidates must apply through the ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) and preference will be given to applicants graduated within the past 30 months. All applications will be screened for eligibility. Qualifications include graduation from an LCME-accredited medical school, ECFMG certification for foreign grads, and USMLE/COMLEX exams passed on the first attempt. Applicants must submit their application through ERAS.

# of Locations

Residents work at multiple locations, including USA Health University Hospital and USA Health Children's & Women's Hospital, providing a wide range of patient care experiences including trauma care, women's health, and population health.

Fellowship

The family medicine residency program offers various fellowship opportunities, including Family Medicine Obstetrics and Primary Care Sports Medicine. Graduates often continue their education in these subspecialties.

Resident Life

Overview

The Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of South Alabama is unique in that it combines a patient-centered medical home approach with a rich academic experience, being the only family medicine residency in Alabama located in an academic health center. Residents have access to a multidisciplinary team and the opportunity to treat the whole patient, understanding the effects of home and family life on health.

On Call Schedule

PGY-1 takes call 5 months out of the year and averages 4 calls a month. PGY-2 takes 40 family medicine calls per year with 4 calls per month for ten months. No FM calls are assigned during ICU or OB night float months. During ICU month, calls are every fourth day. PGY-3 takes approximately 21-22 calls per year with an average of 2 calls or less per month over 12 months. During an average call, the resident is expected to cover patients at both USA Health University Hospital and USA Health Children's & Women’s Hospital.

The Family Medicine Residency Program lasts for three years, corresponding to the three levels of training: PGY-1, PGY-2, and PGY-3.

Housing

Southerners residing in Mobile maintain affordable living with options to rent or buy homes. Most residents live in Midtown, which is within a short distance from the hospitals and clinics, with the majority finding affordable housing on their residency salary.

Alumni

Alumni of the program commonly stay in the Southeast, many in Mobile, and have a 100% board pass rate over the past 10 years. Alumni practice in a variety of settings, including family medicine and specialties, with many remaining connected to the local community.

Salary & Benefits

Benefits Overview

On call meals are reimbursed at a rate of $5.00/meal. Parking is free at all locations. There is a book stipend within the Family Medicine department, and we get a discount at the medical bookstore. We are reimbursed for mileage for work travel. We receive discounted service from a cellular service as hospital employees. We are provided with embroidered white coats (3 intern year and 1/year each additional year) and scrubs. An electronic book stipend and access to the Challenger board review course is provided.

PGY-1 Salary

Vacation

During the intern year, residents enjoy 2-3 weekends off. The 80-hour work week is strictly enforced across the institution, allowing for personal and family time to be prioritized throughout the year.
