The program sponsors J-1 visas only for International Medical Graduates (IMGs). IMG applicants must be ECFMG certified if they have graduated from medical school at the time of application and must be ECFMG certified by the start of Residency if they have not yet graduated. Prior residency training is not required for the residency program, although hands-on clinical experiences in the United States are particularly valued.

Curriculum & Education

Application
Applications are received through ERAS until December 1. All required documents include letters of reference, MSPE, personal statement, CV/ERAS common application, medical school transcript, and USMLE/COMLEX scores. Interviews are by invitation only, conducted on selected Mondays and Tuesdays from November to January, with all communication via Thalamus GME Scheduler.

Fellowship
The Pediatric Residency program at the University of Hawai`i offers multiple fellowship opportunities available after graduation. These include Addiction Medicine Fellowship, Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship, Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship, Geriatric Medicine Fellowship, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship, Sports Medicine Fellowship, and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship. PGY-1 Salary
Annual salary is $52,000 and includes relocation reimbursement of $2,000, 3 weeks of paid vacation, 12 days of paid sick leave, paid meals on call, and health benefits including medical, dental, vision, malpractice, and disability insurance.
Vacation
Residents are entitled to 3 weeks of vacation annually, which is split into two weeks and one week. Vacation time must be scheduled and is not carried over from year to year.
