Curriculum & Education

The curriculum for the residency program emphasizes hands-on experience in various specialties, including women's health, pediatrics, geriatrics, and sports medicine, along with opportunities for youth mentorship.
Application
Applications are due by Nov. 30 of the application year. Interviews are held November through January and are scheduled by the residency office. The following materials must be submitted through ERAS: Universal application, Personal statement, Medical school Dean’s letter, Medical school transcript, Three letters of recommendation from medical school faculty, A copy of the student’s USMLE or COMLEX scores, A wallet-size photo.

Residents work at multiple locations, including Scripps Mercy Hospital in Chula Vista, San Ysidro Health clinics, and various community clinics along the US-Mexico border.
Fellowship
The program offers a fourth-year Maternal Health Fellowship focused on advanced training in maternal health for underserved communities along the U.S.-Mexico border. Graduates of the fellowship are expected to engage in advanced clinical experiences, quality improvement projects, and community health efforts. There are opportunities for graduates to pursue various fellowship paths, including maternal health, hospitalist positions, and leadership roles in community health.

More than 75% of program graduates practice medicine in underserved areas and 65% have stayed in the South Bay and greater San Diego area. Notable alumni include Dr. Maria Carriedo-Ceniceros, Dr. Raul Trejo, and Dr. Rakesh Patel, who are all leaders in community health.
Salary & Benefits
Benefits Overview
PGY-1 resident salary: $80,078 ($5,000 housing stipend included), PGY-2 resident salary: $81,725 ($5,000 housing stipend included), PGY-3 resident salary: $85,053 ($5,000 housing stipend included), PGY-4 chief resident salary: $109,299. Health insurance for residents (and their families at minimal cost), 4 weeks vacation, meal credit, free on-site parking, and counseling services.

Vacation
Four weeks per year (20 working days) for all residents. Up to 10 additional days for personal time off (medical leave, family emergencies or holidays).
