Curriculum & Education
Overview
The Surgery Residency provides hands-on education that enables our residents to take an early and active role in patient care, working side-by-side with experienced surgeons and specialists. Rotations at Hennepin Healthcare, as well as the area’s leading private, community, and children’s hospitals, provide a well-rounded experience in all facets of general surgery.
Application
Applications are due on October 10. Applicants should submit their applications through the Electronic Resident Application System (ERAS) and expect an invitation for interviews around October 23. Interviews will be held in November and December. Requirements include medical school transcripts, a Dean's letter, a minimum of three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and the ERAS supplemental application. International graduates are encouraged to apply, provided they hold a green card or J1 visa and are ECFMG verified to interview by February 1.

Residents work at Hennepin Healthcare and several private practice hospitals around Minneapolis, offering diverse clinical experiences across various settings.
Fellowship
The program offers flexibility for residents to choose a 1-2 year dedicated research period or a 1 year surgical fellowship. Residents have pursued research in colorectal surgery and pediatric surgery or completed fellowships in surgical critical care before returning for their PGY4 year.

On Call Schedule
6 Trauma blocks, consisting of a 24-hour call every 8 days.
