The current residents consist of 30 individuals: 15 MDs and 3 DOs who bring together diverse backgrounds and experiences. Among these residents, 5 are international medical graduates, enriching the program's diversity.

Curriculum & Education

Overview

The curriculum for first-year residents (PGY-1's) includes hands-on experience and exposure to high-risk obstetrics, surgical procedures, and comprehensive approaches to emergency medicine.

Application

All applications for the graduate medical education (GME) residency programs must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Key dates include: Please check the ERAS website for the most current and detailed information regarding deadlines and application requirements. Interviews predominantly take place from mid-November to February. Additionally, applicants must submit a personal statement, three letters of recommendation, and other required documents as per the program's specifics.

Residents will work at various hospitals and clinics including the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, which is a freestanding pediatric hospital.

Fellowship

After completing the residency, graduates have opportunities for various fellowships. The residency program shows an inclination toward extensive career development paths including specialized training and practice in diverse fields such as Geriatrics, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, and many others. Further, residents are encouraged to pursue research and scholarly activities, contributing to robust post-graduation opportunities.

The program has several residencies including Combined Internal Medicine & Geriatrics Residency, Dermatology Residency, Emergency Medicine Residency, Family Medicine Residency, Integrated Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Residency, Internal Medicine Residency, Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency, Ophthalmology Residency, Otolaryngology Residency, Pediatrics Residency, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency, Podiatry Residency, Psychiatry Residency, Radiology Residency, Surgery Residency, Urology Residency, and Vascular Surgery. Residents train at various hospitals including Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (the only Level I trauma center in the region) and Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (Virginia’s only freestanding, full-service pediatric hospital).

Vacation
