Summary of Residency Program

The Urology Residency Program at the Detroit Medical Center is designed to train a well-rounded urologist capable of entering private practice or pursuing fellowship opportunities. The program is ACGME-accredited and consists of 14 ACGME faculty urologists and various affiliated attending urologists. The Detroit Medical Center Urology Residency Program accepts both qualified MD and DO applicants, and foreign medical graduates must be ECFMG certified. If selected for the residency, they will work with the GME office to offer J1 visas as needed, making the program IMG-friendly.

Curriculum & Education

Overview

The curriculum includes rotations through DMC hospitals and St. Joseph Oakland Mercy Hospital, and features a diverse range of urologic cases, incorporating robotics, didactics with surgery, and participation in various national and international meetings.

Application

Applications will only be accepted via the ERAS website. Program Name: Detroit Medical Center Corporation Program. Program ACGME code: 4802500187. Requirements: ERAS Application, Three Letters of recommendation, Completion of the first part of board exams (Comlex 1 or USMLE Step 1). Recommended to apply as soon as possible after ERAS opens in mid-September. Interviews are held the first 2 weeks of December. Both DO and MD students are encouraged to spend a rotation in the department.

Residents train at several locations, including DMC Harper University Hospital, DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan, DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital, DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, Trinity Health Oakland, and Lakes Surgery Center.

Fellowship

Previous residents have attended various fellowships, including Continence, Pelvic Reconstruction Surgery, Neurourology, Endourology, Female Urology, Genitourinary Reconstruction Urology, Oncology Robotics, and Robotic Laparoscopic surgery, among others.

Housing

DMC does not offer housing for rotating medical students but can provide suggestions.

Alumni

Graduates have gone on to fellowship training, with every resident who desired a fellowship matched to one. They pursue a variety of subspecialties, including urologic oncology, esthetics, and trauma. Alumni are now found in various prestigious fellowships and academic positions across the country.
