The Urology Residency program accepts international medical graduates (IMGs) as long as they hold a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate. They should also be eligible to obtain a North Carolina medical license when applying. The residency program requires IMG applicants to have passed both Step 1 and Step 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).

Curriculum & Education

Overview

Residents will receive extensive training and education each year during the program. They will train in specific rotations and gain confidence in their skills, especially during the internship year (PGY-1), where they focus on general surgical training and urology rotations.

Application

Applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Foreign medical graduates must hold a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate and be eligible to obtain a North Carolina medical license at the time of application. Urology residency applicants must have passed both Step 1 and Step 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) to be eligible for entry into our program. The following is a list of requirements for our program: Common Application Form, Curriculum Vitae, Personal Statement, Medical School Transcript, 3 Letters of Recommendation, Photo, United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Transcripts, ECFMG Status Report (foreign medical graduates only).

Residents will have training opportunities at three locations: Carolinas Medical Center, Atrium Health Mercy, and Atrium Health University City.

Fellowship

The Urology residency program offers several fellowship opportunities, including Sports Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedic, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Vascular Surgery. Graduates pursue various pathways after residency, including specialized fellowships in these fields.
