Curriculum & Education

Overview

The training program offers access to leading-edge technology, clinical and operative training with an emphasis on enhancing technical skills, and instructors who are fellowship-trained in advanced laparoscopic surgery. Participants perform more than 1,000 surgeries during their training, which also includes various elective rotations like minimally invasive surgery and surgical oncology.

Application

The following materials must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS): 1) Completed ERAS application, 2) Three letters of recommendation, 3) Personal statement, 4) Medical school transcript, 5) Dean’s letter, 6) USMLE scores: minimum of 220 on Step 1 and 230 on Step 2 CK. Residents train at four Kansas City metro hospitals: Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City, Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Truman Medical Center.

Fellowship

Approximately 70% of graduating chief residents obtain fellowships in surgery. Recent graduates have been successful in securing positions in various subspecialties.
