The Family Medicine Residency Program encourages applications from outstanding International Medical School students or recent graduates. However, all applicants, including International Medical Graduates (IMGs), must meet specific requirements, such as holding a current valid ECMFG certificate and passing the USMLE exams. It is also noted that the program does not sponsor any visas and does not accept applicants on H1B and J1 Visas.

Curriculum & Education

Overview

The Residency’s innovative curriculum is designed to prepare residents for the Future of Family Medicine, in academic, research, clinical practice, community advocacy, and family medicine subspecialty careers. Our curriculum offers an opportunity for publishable research/scholarly projects and an optional longitudinal fellowship experience during the second and third years.

Application

The Family Medicine Residency Program in New Brunswick only accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Applications for PGY-1 positions are accepted from September through early December. Any applications received after this period will not be reviewed. Minimum requirements for applying include enrollment in NRMP, graduation from accredited medical college, passing USMLE Step 2 or COMLEX Level 2-CE, and at least one year of formal clinical experience in a U.S. hospital. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, or meet ECFMG requirements if they are IMGs.

Residents rotate through various locations, including Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Family Medicine at Monument Square, Parker Health Group, Inc., Eric B. Chandler Health Center, and St. Peter's University Hospital.

Fellowship

The program has fellowship tracks for residents wanting more exposure in areas such as Community Health, Sports Medicine, Reproductive Health, and Geriatrics. Graduates have pursued various career paths in private outpatient practices, academic medicine, fellowships, and government work, with some residents participating in additional training opportunities in their last few years.

Overview

The Family Medicine Residency Program in New Brunswick is the only university-based family medicine residency in New Jersey, offering cutting-edge training in family medicine with access to all major subspecialties through Robert Wood Johnson Medical School faculty, fellows, residents and students. The 5-5-5 academically focused, fellowship-linked, community-oriented program prepares residents to become leaders in clinical care, community outreach, education, and primary care practice-based research.

On Call Schedule

Because we have a 'Night Float' rotation, the only time that our in-patient service needs on-call coverage is between Friday night and Sunday morning. On average, we are on-call for our FM service about once a month. On a few of our specialty rotations, we do take overnight call since we function on that team just like one of that service’s residents (typically one weekend day per two-week block at the most).

Housing

Residents have multiple housing options available in the New Brunswick area, including urban and suburban settings. The proximity to major highways and a train station ensures manageable commutes. Residents can find accommodations within walking distance of the hospital or further away (up to 30 minutes by car).

Alumni

Graduates from the program pursue various paths, including private outpatient practices, academic medicine, fellowships, hospitalist groups, and roles in policy or research. There is a diverse range of opportunities reflecting the individualized training they receive during the program.

Night Float system provides continuity of care and limited night call, 4 weeks vacation, remote access to the comprehensive electronic healthcare records of our hospital and office patients, book allowance, Epocrates Essentials, Prescribers letter, Rosh Review board questions, Challenger CME online, ALSO, PALS, NRP, ACLS training, career counseling, guidance and training, Committee of Interns and Residents benefit package (health, dental, life, disability, liability insurance; paid sick time, holidays, personal days; uniforms, laundry service, meal allowance).

Vacation

Residents are allocated four weeks of vacation each year, typically divided into two separate two-week blocks, along with additional personal days and compensation for working holidays.
