Curriculum & Education

Overview

The program structure consists of four years: PGY 1 & 2 (Clinical Base Year and Basic Anesthesiology) and PGY 3 & 4 (Subspecialty and Advanced Anesthesiology). Residents receive supervision from faculty and have a tailored mentorship experience to guide their development.

Application

Applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The 2024-2025 interview season will be entirely virtual. Competitive applicants should have outstanding recommendations and academic credentials, including a CV, three letters of reference, a Dean’s letter, a medical school transcript, and USMLE scores.

Residents rotate through MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Children’s National Medical Center, Georgetown Pain Management, MedStar Surgery Center, and Hospital for Special Surgery.

Fellowship

The program structure includes significant opportunities for flexibility during the final year, where residents can pursue elective rotations in various clinical or research areas of interest. Elective rotations may include advanced clinical tracks and options at several hospitals. This flexibility suggests a pathway for fellowships or specialized practice after residency, which recent graduates have successfully navigated.

On Call Schedule

1:2 attending to resident coverage during daytime hours, with 2 attending anesthesiologists in-house overnight and weekends at Georgetown University Hospital. 3 attending anesthesiologists in-house overnight and weekends at Washington Hospital Center, and 1 attending anesthesiologist in-house overnight and weekends at Children’s National Medical Center.

Salary & Benefits

Residents are entitled to a total of 20 days of vacation per year (15 days of vacation/sick and 5 days for meetings/conferences), with the program leadership accommodating residents' calendar requests.
