Curriculum & Education

Overview

The curriculum promotes longitudinal outpatient experiences over all three years of training, with a major portion of training in the primary care setting of the Family Medicine Residency Clinic (FMRC). Interns have one half day of clinic a week, while second and third-year residents have two full days of clinic a week, allowing continuity of care for their patients. Weekly didactic sessions are held for four hours on Fridays when SCS is not scheduled. The residents also participate in community service and wellness activities, among others.

Application

The McLaren Greater Lansing Family Medicine Residency will only accept applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Paper applications or emailed applications will not be accepted. Interviews are scheduled in the fall and are conducted by a committee comprised of family medicine residents, faculty, and administration. Traditionally there are four funded positions for each year.

# of Locations

Residents will primarily work in the primary care setting of the Family Medicine Residency Clinic (FMRC) and also have rotations in various hospitals in the Lansing area, including Sparrow Hospital and other affiliated clinics. The program emphasizes community involvement and offers diverse patient experiences.

Fellowship

The program offers a variety of fellowships including sports medicine, geriatrics, OB, sleep medicine, adolescent medicine, palliative care, hospital medicine, preventive medicine, occupational medicine, emergency medicine, wilderness medicine, rural medicine, substance abuse, and women's health.

Resident Life

Overview

The Family Medicine Residency Program at McLaren Bay Region is designed to provide a positive teaching and learning environment to help develop Resident Physicians into proactive, self-directed lifelong learners that are compassionate, competent, and qualified to care for the health concerns of the Community.

On Call Schedule

During intern year, there may be rotation-specific call coverage. Second and third-year residents have after hours clinic call, taken from home, averaging 2 to 7 calls.Calls are well managed and do not intrude into home life.

# of Years of Program

The program typically lasts for three years, with rotations covering various specialties including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, and electives. Each resident is entitled to 20 days of vacation per year.

Housing

Residents live in various surrounding communities, with many buying homes due to the area’s affordable real estate. The transition provides a wealth of entertainment options, outdoor recreation, and a blend of community.

Alumni

Residents from this program end up all over the country, including New York, Illinois, Maine, Virginia, Texas, Washington, and Oregon. Half of the past few classes have stayed in Michigan to practice. Fellowships available include those in sports medicine, geriatrics, OB, sleep medicine, adolescent medicine, palliative care, hospital medicine, preventive medicine, occupational medicine, emergency medicine, wilderness medicine, rural medicine, substance abuse, and women’s health.
