Curriculum & Education
Overview
The intern year provides incoming residents with a solid introduction to the breadth and diversity of surgery, with rotations at UPMC Jameson and UPMC Horizon, including three months of out-of-house rotations at UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Mercy, and UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Residents also undergo Central Venous Catheter Placement Training and Certification and must demonstrate procedural competences in various procedures by the end of their first year. The curriculum includes dedicated didactic lectures, morbidity and mortality sessions, a monthly journal club, and bedside instruction.
Application
Application Requirements: The General Surgery residency program at UPMC Horizon accepts two categorical residents each year for five clinical years. Applications are handled through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). A complete application includes: MyERAS Application, Personal Statement, Official Medical School Transcripts, Medical Student Performance Evaluation, Three Letters of Recommendation, and USMLE/COMLEX Transcripts. No minimum score is required. International graduates must hold a current ECFMG certificate. The interview agenda includes participating in lectures, tours, and individual interviews.
